We will fight the Trump tariffs for all Canadians
April 2nd, 2025
For the past few weeks, I’ve been out speaking with our neighbors and overwhelmingly the top of mind issue is that of tariffs, the impact on our jobs and economy and what will happen with an ever worsening cost of living crisis. People are fed up and they are also scared.
I can also tell you: the NDP is ready to meet this moment.
Here’s what we would do:
Implement a strong Team Canada approach - including all of the provinces, trade unions and industry groups.
Keep everything on the table, including possibly cutting the flow of critical minerals to the U.S.- Canadian imports that are crucial to the U.S. economy.
Make important changes to our procurement policies to favour Canadian companies, give preference to suppliers and contractors with a unionized workforce in the bid selection process.
Increase Canadian content requirements and prioritize using building materials, like steel, made by Canadian workers, in all publicly funded infrastructure projects.
Ban American companies from all federal government procurement contracts and projects when Canadian workers can do them, until Trump removes his reckless tariffs.
To help workers who lose their jobs due to the tariffs, we would increase EI and improve the eligibility rules so that people can access support when they need it.
I am on leave from my job to run in this election, but in my regular life, I head up the Communications and Political Action Department at the United Steelworkers union, where I was working as part of a binational team to tackle the tariffs, on behalf of workers.
For more than 18 years, I have been working hard on behalf of workers across the country, at the Canadian Auto Workers union, Unifor, the Ontario Federation of Labour and now the USW. I have organized for better wages, more job security, respect and recognition for equity, sustainable jobs, fairer trade rules and more. I am in this for you, with a laser focus on making life better for people in our community.

Thank you and let’s do this together!
